Lille center-back Rafael Fernandes, 22, has officially joined Scottish Premiership giants Rangers FC on loan, as announced by both clubs. The Portugal U20 international, who moved to Lille from Portuguese side Arouca for €2 million just a year ago, has struggled for game time at the Ligue 1 club. He has yet to make an appearance this season under Lille manager Bruno Genesio.
In pursuit of regular minutes, Lille has agreed to loan Fernandes to Rangers for the remainder of the season. The deal includes an option for Rangers to make the move permanent. Fernandes is currently under contract with Lille until 2028.
The former Sporting CP Academy graduate expressed his excitement about the move:
“I am very happy to be here. It was a club I wanted to come to since I heard about the interest, and I am really happy to finally be here. My first impressions have been really good. I met some of my colleagues and staff, and they all made me feel comfortable to start this new challenge.”
Rangers fans will hope Fernandes can strengthen their defensive options as the team continues its domestic and European campaigns.
